Let’s go ahead and start this out with a disclaimer: I refuse to acknowledge any ‘crappies’ this week. Nothing at all can detract from the Happies. It’s not that my week has been annoyance free – my favorite, very comfortable sandals broke and there have been some fairly dramatic plumbing issues – but this was/is an amazing week.
He’s home!!! After nearly 8 months of deployment, my Papi Chulo is home. And, amazingly, he didn’t have duty the day after returning to port (!) and now he has his birthday off (!!). Yep, no crappies here.
For his homecoming, I spiffed up his car (a lot) and made Cuban-style guava pastries. It took me most of a day last week to find the necessary ingredients (there just aren’t very many places to find Cuban things in Hawaii), but it was so worth it. He bit into one and said “This tastes like home!” He insists he doesn’t want to know how I did it because it’s amazing and magical to have the pastries so far from home, but if you want to make them you can find my guava pastry recipe here!
Since today is my man’s birthday, I decided to feature a few items that remind me of him.
This first pick is a set of stingray cuff links is from Cosmic Firefly. They’re a perfect fit for Papi Chulo because he loves rays (they kind of terrify me!) and he actually likes getting dressed up. He picked up some custom shirts in port on his deployment and I noticed some of them have French cuffs. If I’d spotted these earlier/if I weren’t in a place that seems to have mail delivered primarily by banana boat, I would have ordered these for him.
He may insist on buying this pick when I show it to him! Besides being startlingly unafraid of rays, he loves physics. He solves physics problems for fun! I had a horrible high school physics teacher and am not a huge fan, but I love watching how he lights up when talking about physics. This wall decal shows Maxwell’s equations and is from Cut n Paste Shop. They actually have a whole lot of science decals – I’m kind of nervous about how the walls might look after he notices this shop…
Finally, these surfboard hooks are something I know he could use. He doesn’t exactly surf, but he paddleboards, kite surfs, and wind surfs, so there are plenty of boards and related equipment! They are from shop Improbable Construct and come in a few different finish options. We plan on celebrating his birthday by going paddling together this morning!
I hope everyone else has had a very, very happy week, as well!
